What TDEE stands for and its 4 components

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It's the sum of every calorie your body burns in 24 hours, across four components. Understanding the parts matters, because most of the confusion around calorie counting comes from people conflating one component with the whole.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is the energy your body uses at complete rest just to stay alive — breathing, circulating blood, keeping your organs and brain running. BMR is the biggest slice by far, accounting for roughly 60 to 70% of your total daily burn. Even on a day you never leave bed, your body spends this.

Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). Digesting and processing what you eat costs energy. TEF is usually around 10% of your daily total, and it varies by macronutrient — protein has the highest thermic effect, which is one reason higher-protein diets feel slightly more "expensive" metabolically.

Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT). This is the energy of deliberate exercise: your run, your lifting session, your yoga class. For most people EAT is smaller than they assume — a single hour of moderate exercise rarely moves the total as much as a full day of general activity does.

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). Everything else you do while awake and moving — walking to the mailbox, standing, cooking, fidgeting, taking the stairs. TDEE is what you actually burn living your life. It takes BMR and adds the energy of digestion, exercise, and movement. TDEE is always higher than BMR, usually by 20 to 90% depending on how active you are.

How to calculate TDEE (the Mifflin-St Jeor formula)

Calculating TDEE is a two-step process: find your BMR, then multiply by an activity factor.

Step 1: Calculate your BMR with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published by M.D. Mifflin and S.T. St Jeor in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1990, is the modern standard for estimating BMR and is generally considered more accurate for today's population than the older Harris-Benedict equation from 1919. It uses your weight in kilograms, height in centimeters, and age in years:

  • Men: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + 5
  • Women: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161

Worked example — a 30-year-old woman weighing 68 kg at 165 cm:

BMR = (10 × 68) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 30) − 161 = 680 + 1,031 − 150 − 161 = 1,400 calories.

Step 2: Multiply your BMR by your activity factor.

Your BMR only covers rest. To get your full TDEE, multiply it by a factor that reflects how much you move — from 1.2 for a mostly sedentary life up to 1.9 for very high activity. If our example woman is lightly active (BMR 1,400 × 1.375), her TDEE is about 1,925 calories a day.

How to use your TDEE for weight loss, gain, or maintenance

Once you have your TDEE, using it is refreshingly simple. Your goal determines which side of the number you eat on.

To lose weight, eat below your TDEE. A pound of body fat holds roughly 3,500 calories, so a daily deficit of about 500 calories adds up to roughly 1 pound of loss per week.
